Intent

At Kaye’s Academy, through our Physical Education Curriculum we aim to inspire a life-long love of sports and fitness and to ensure children understand the importance of its contribution to leading a healthy lifestyle. By developing the key skills across all strands of school sports progressively through each year group, children develop their physical confidence enabling them to raise their aspirations. The values of fairness, respect and kindness are promoted and embedded enabling children to build character and resilience within a competitive environment. All children are included, and the curriculum is adapted to ensure the needs of vulnerable pupils and those with additional S.E.N.D. are met.

Implementation

Our Physical Education lessons teach the children new skills, actions and ideas. As the children progress through the Key Stages, they are able to perform these skills more consistently and fluently with improving control and co-ordination. The children become able to select and apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired through their P.E lessons to develop tactics and adapt these depending on the rules of the activity. At Kaye’s, the children also learn how to evaluate and improve their own performances in P.E which develops their ability to describe, evaluate, appreciate and explain the effectiveness of their performance in order to improve this and make key changes for next time. Within our P.E curriculum we also build the children’s knowledge and understanding around fitness and health and why physical activity is essential for our health and mental wellbeing. This means they can understand the effects that exercise has on our bodies. The children are exposed to a range of different sporting activities through our inclusive curriculum that provides opportunities for the children to try something new and exciting.

Impact

Our Physical Education Curriculum encourages our children to connect with each other through sport and a range of activities. This provides opportunities to share positive experiences whilst being physically active. The children are able to work together and show team spirit. The children build upon skills throughout their time in school so that they are confident to participate and try their best. They are able to give the help and support to those that need it and can work empathetically with their peers whilst providing encouragement. The children are able to reflect on their own practise during their lessons and apply this to make improvements to their own performance.
